Sunway City can be an overwhelming complex to visit. It has grown vastly from my first visit in 2009. A sprawling 800-acre township developed as an integrated lifestyle and entertainment destination roughly half an hour away from the KLIA airports or from the city in Selangor, Malaysia. It has three hotels, a huge theme park in Sunway Lagoon, a mall and a number of businesses and facilities for education and medical. It’s an ideal place to stay for families and friends looking for a convenient getaway that combines comfort and adventure in one place.

Sunway Hotel Resort and Spa

Whether its for business or leisure, there is something for everyone at Sunway City. We got a little tour of the township starting with the flagship 5-star Sunway Hotel Resort and Spa. Everything on this 468-room, suites and villa looks elegant and grand. The neoclassical design and tasteful furnishing, generous space, scenic views and topnotch facilities are shared throughout the resort.

The Sunway Villas offer a more romantic and private escape as each of the 17-villas have their own pool and surrounded by lush greenery. It has a touch of Bali-inspired ambience especially with the adjacent Mandara Spa. The guests at the hotel building and villas have easy access to the free-form pool with a man-made falls. The fitness center is located in the area as well as the cool cave-like lounging area just behind the falls.

Sunway Pyramid Hotel and Mall

Our group was fortunate enough to stay at the 4.5-star Sunway Pyramid Hotel. Recently renovated in 2016, rooms looks fancy and modern with all the creature comforts with included amenities. Our twin bed room has a nice view of the park. Each room also has its own smartphone unit with internet guest can use during the stay. The Pyramid Hotel is interconnected by a bridgeway to the Sunway Hotel Resort and Spa where breakfast is usually taken. It also connected to the mega Pyramid Mall which would delight shoppers and foodies for its many dining options.

Also connected to the mall is the 4-star Sunway Clio Hotel. Don’t think less of this hotel as this 26-story and 401 deluxe and executive rooms hotel have attractive dash of colors. Sexy even. The dining area on the upper floor have awesome view of the city skylines. The hotel have its own pool and fitness center.

Sunway Lagoon Theme Park

What I was looking forward to in our stay at Sunway City is the Sunway Lagoon Theme Park. I remember enjoying this park back in 2009. What we regretted though is not bringing clothes for the water park. This time I made sure to enjoy this section of the 88-acre park. I’m quite impressed how they have maintained the quality of the park for almost a decade. It now has six main sub parks from five before – Water Park, Extreme Park, Amusement Park, Wildlife Park, Scream Park and the new addition Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon – the first Nickelodeon themed land in Asia featuring more than 10 rides.

My eyes were set on the water park which have the largest man-made beach stretching over 13,000 square meters and a man-made surf pool that can generate waves up to eight feet. With Christian, Carla and Marky, the first ride we tried was the Vuvuzela, the highest, largest and most thrilling water ride in the park. And it has all the fun and adrenaline-pump we were expecting. Riding a 4-person rubber raft, one has to hold-on to dear lives as the raft thrillingly slip and slide down towards a huge funnel that looks like a vuvuzela (a plastic horn). The part where the raft slides up and down the funnel was climatic. We enjoyed this so much that I rode here three times!!!

Other rides we enjoyed after was the swift slide at Congo Challenge, the pitch-black twist and turns inside the African Phyton, riding the wave body-board style at Flow Rider then chilling by Victoria Falls and Wave Pool after.

Seasonal Surprises

The top-rated hotels and iconic rides at Sunway Lagoon theme park can be enjoyed all-year long. But come in special times of the year and there are seasonal attractions. We visited before Halloween and they have the Night of Fright attraction running for the 6th year this year. Six horror houses in different fright themes. We managed to visit four. The slaughter house are stuff of nightmares that leaves you cringing even awake. The clowns were disturbing but the woodlands were kinda mesmerizing in setting. The production were really high value making for a fun and entertaining visit.
