Being on vacation is the perfect time to enjoy a few alcoholic drinks. You are away from home, relaxing and celebrating, after all!
Although it can be a lot of fun to drink while you’re far away from home, it can also be miserable. It can also be dangerous. If you aren’t careful, you could get lost, find yourself somewhere strange in the morning, or worse.
Make sure alcohol enhances your vacation instead of ruining it by following the five tips on this list.
Choose a Designated Driver
It’s never a good idea to drink and drive, but it is an especially bad idea if you’re on vacation. Figuring out how to drive on unfamiliar roads can be difficult during the best of times, but it can be nearly impossible if you’re intoxicated. If you plan on drinking while you’re on vacation, make sure you designate a driver.
Just make sure your designated driver is committed to their duty of getting everyone back to your lodging safely. In one study, nearly 40 percent of designated drivers are willing to drink a little bit, which doesn’t make them a good designated driver at all.
No one should be pressured to be the designated driver. Have an honest conversation before anyone drinks to make sure there’s one person in your group who is truly comfortable being the designated driver. If no one is, plan ahead to call an Uber, a cab, or look up a subway or bus route.
Prepare for Your Safety Beforehand
Drinking can be a lot of fun, but it can also be dangerous if you aren’t careful. Before you order your first drink, make sure you prepare for your safety ahead of time.
A few things you should do every time you go out to drink when on vacation include:
- Don’t take a drink that’s handed to you from a stranger
- Keep your belongings on you at all times
- Have an exit strategy if you need to leave right away
Don’t Drink and Swim
The things you do on vacation are going to be different than what you’re used to doing at home. So, even if you drink at home, you may find that drinking on vacation is a lot different because what you’re doing in between sips is different.
There are some things you shouldn’t do when you’re drinking that you might be tempted to do when you’re on vacation. For example, alcohol and swimming don’t mix well, so avoid drinking if you plan on taking a dip in the hotel pool, and especially if you want to jump into the ocean.
You shouldn’t drink and do anything overly active either. For example, if you’ve got a busy afternoon planned at a theme park, the last thing you want to do is have a little too much to drink.
Make Sure You Eat
Getting a buzz off of an alcoholic drink can be a lot of fun, but you don’t want that inebriated feeling to sneak up on you unexpectedly. You could end up being sick, uncomfortable, or even find yourself in a compromising position if you aren’t careful.
Make sure you eat plenty of food before you start drinking. With a full stomach, the alcohol you drink will be absorbed more slowly, enabling you to stay out, have a few drinks, and enjoy yourself without feeling too hung over the next day.
Know What To Order
Love ordering an appletini or a Long Island iced tea back at home? Although no one may think twice mixing up either of these concoctions for you at your local bar, they may look at you differently when you order them somewhere else.
Whether you realize it or not, the bartender is judging you when you order your drinks. If you’re in a swanky Parisian bar ordering a Jägerbomb, you’re going to stick out like a sore thumb. Instead, look at the menu and see which mixed drinks the establishment is known for. If you need a little help, don’t be afraid to ask the bartender or your server what they would recommend.
Drinking on vacation can be a lot of fun! Just don’t drink the wrong way and discover it’s the reason why your vacation was ruined. Know what to order, prepare for your safety, and eat well while you’re drinking and you can make sure that you enjoy every evening, in addition to every morning, while you’re away from home.
