Manila: Nuvo Y5k

Hanging out at the Bar

Hanging out at the Bar

Nuvo, bar and restaurant
is one of the classiest night life places in town located in Greenbelt 2, Makati. On my way there I was expecting to do more food and establishment shoots. But when I arrived there about 2 hours before midnight, I never expected to walk into one of the high society’s anticipated party event as Nuvo celebrates its 5th anniversary last July 25 2007. The party dubbed as Nuvo Y5k sought to bring an atmosphere of nostalgia as it plays some feel good and vibe music of the nineties.

Happy New Year

World Pyro Olympics Poland

World Pyro Olympics

Happy New Year! I know it’s a bit late (blame it on the slower than dial-up DSL internet connection at home) but we still have “Three Kings” right? 😀

I won’t go much into details but 2006 has been great, lots of major stuff happened from travels to career moves and all. The start of 2007 was a bit busy but it looks more promising with lots of great possibilities ahead.

Speeding through Manila’s thoroughfares

Waiting in Ped Xing

Waiting in Ped Xing

My vision of Manila has been limited to DVDs, Hidalgo, LRT, crowded streets and dark grievous corners where anything can happen. I studied at U-Belt for more than four years and had only seen only the dilapidating side of Manila at that time. But a quick walk through Manila’s inner thoroughfares recently expanded my vision of this old city.

Into the Quay

Clark Quay

Singapore’s Clark Quay

I must admit that it was my first time visiting Singapore. Thanks to my friend Jaz who let me squatter at his apartment during my sojourn at this famed “Fine” city, it sure lowered my travel expenses since Singapore’s cost of living is quite high. It sure was exciting seeing those myriad pastel colored houses, double decked buses and sanitized streets when the MRT got out of the tunnel from Changi Airport.

Dynamic lighted umbrella roofs

Dynamic lighted umrella roofs with phallic inspired(?) air ducts

I only have a limited time to truly explore the city after we got back from Vietnam. My impression of Singapore is really a small country where everything is in place or order. It’s an architect’s playground with dynamic designed buildings. Everything really is well presented here. I mean, the river isn’t that good looking, it even looks like the “Bagong Ilog” in Pasig, but they somehow managed to make it “Look Good,” which is clever actually. They don’t have much of a major heritage here, but they make it a point to make it well known by putting informative markers which makes them more interesting.

2nd Arts and Music Festival

NozeGrind Performance

Metal genre band, NozeGrind performs at the 2nd Arts and Music Festival held at SM Mega Trade Hall, Megamall

The country may be in a “State of Emergency” but the music and the arts shall never stop expressing their sentiments on what is heppening right now in our country. The recent Arts and Music Festival for the 2nd day of the event were quite vocal on their perspective on what’s happening. In truth the media right now is under a leash, one wrong move and they could easiy be overtaken. It seems every week, a lot has been happening in our country, from the Ultra Stampede the first week, then there’s the Lanslide in Leyte, and now this State of Emergency. I hope PGMA is doing the right thing here and help more in the country’s situation.

NozeGrind

Longtime college buddy, Fully, does the vocals for the Band, NozeGrind

Yamato drummers in Manila

Yamato Drummers

Yamato Drummers

You have to check this out! Yamato Drummers of Japan are doing live performances in Manila and Cebu. Their show started last night at CCP, where we were able to catch thanks to the complimentary tickets from Dude F, who was responsible in creating the promotional/ marketing materials for Japan Foundation’s Egai Sai Events which this show is a part of.

Feel the beat, feel the drums and feel the energy! It’s a really fun show, guaranteed. I would have taken photos, but cameras aren’t allowed in CCP. Let me see if I can still catch their free show on 13th Jan, Friday at Riverbanks, Marikina and this time bring in a camera. They’ll have another show tonight in PETA theater in Quezon City if you guys can make it. Then they’ll be in Cebu, Ayala Center on Saturday.

Misa de gallo

Manila Cathedral

The Manila Cathedral at Simbang Gabi

Churches are very interesting structures. For the Filipinos, it serves as a milestone in our spanish history. I view them in level with how I view the interesting temples of our neighboring countries. One tradition that Filipinos hold dear, is the Misa de gallo or Simbang Gabi. It’s a mass held early in the morning which starts on the 16th of December and ends on the eve of Christmas. It was believed that when you complete the nine day morning mass you could make a wish and it will come true.

Quiapo Church

The Quiapo Church early in the morning.

I’m no catholic nor am a religious person, but I hold high esteem for this tradition. Though it’s not really Filipino in origin, since this was started in Mexico back in 1587, through out the years, it has been adopted by Filipinos and made changes that suits it’s unique taste.
