Good morning Vietnam: A Vietnamese Breakfast

Breakfast with the Vietnamese

Breakfast with the Vietnamese

Another thing I learned about the Vietnamese is that they are very lazy when in comes to breakfast. Our guide Lee Tien, told us that most of them after waking up and before going to work usually just stops by at the nearest corner food stall and eat a quick Vietnamese breakfast.

A day in SG 03: Temple hopping in Little India

Serangoon Road in LIttle India

Serangoon Road in LIttle India

After my walk in China Town, I took an MRT to Singapore’s Little India. Immediately after stepping out of the MRT station up in the streets, I was greeted by a faint scent of incense and unknown spices in the air. I walked towards the Serangoon Road, the main road which intersects the community, is also one of Singapore’s oldest roads.

Bora’s regaling establishments

Manok ng ina mo

Chicken ng ina mo!

Who said Bora is all about the white sand, hot bodies strolling the beach, 5 star hotels, talipapa shopping and sumptous expensive food. Tucked away from the beach and hidden in the inner nooks and crannies of the island are little known establishments that may or may not call your attention. If you’re a Filipino, it might catch your eye. First off is the “Manok ng Ina Mo!“, this is in the tradition of those streetside chicken stalls like Andok’s, Snr. Pedro or Mang Bok’s. It’s name would surely call your attention, and maybe if you taste it you would say the pinoy curse word equivalent, for either liking or hating it!

Camote Ugly

And who says “Cayote Ugly” in the US is the hottest bar around. Well they haven’t been to “Camote Ugly” I bet! Get a load of this bar, and check out the menu and sample their “Pancit Canton-tan” and other sexually-derived food name from their menu.

Nabaoy river experience

The crystal clear river of Barangay Nabaoy, Malay, Aklan

The crystal clear river of Barangay Nabaoy, Malay, Aklan

Unbeknownst to many, Boracay is part of the municipality of Malay, which is a region of Aklan. Most of the time, tourist who came from the Caticlan airport or the Ro-ro ferries are immidiately whisked away to the famed Boracay Island. Little do they know that the province of Malay has more to offer than its white sands.

Food and Music

Sumptous food from Chicken Inasal and Music courtesy of the local Tambuli group.

Just 30 minutes drive from the airport going to Barangay Nabaoy, and a very very short hike, you’ll reach the crystal clear waters of Nabaoy, the water source of Boracay. Food prepared by The Chicken Inasal Resto of Boracay (located at D’mall) was already waiting and the amazing instrumental performance of a local Tambuli group greeted us. Mayor Cawiling and the organizers really did an amazing job setting up the place.

KK Adventure Final: Succumb to the spice

Bak Kuh Teh

Bak Kuh Teh. I was so hungry that it took half of my meal before I could take a picture. hehehe

It’s one thing to experience adventures of a particular locale, but like icing to a cake, tasting native food is another adventure of the palate kind.

So how does your Bak Kuh Teh taste like? Honestly, it’s a wierd sounding name, but it’s one of those authentic Malaysian foods you may come across on many of their food or restaurants here. It’s highly customizable to your taste buds, you can choose a combination of spices, with either beef, chicken, or lamb on a bowl of herbal soup and there you go. Instant Bak Kuh Teh. Later I learned (from googling of course) that Bak Kuh Teh is really Chinese in origin. Its recipe was brought here and became really popular due to it’s therapeutic qualities as well.

Satay

Satay! The dark one’s the lamb and the light one is the chicken. I prefer the lamb!

And what better to add on its side is Satay. It’s actually a barbecue but with a choice of either a lamb, chicken or pork. And add to it is the kinda sweet and spicy Satay Sauce! It’s delicious and cheap.
